Marguerite Humeau — The New York Times Land Art Today, Beyond Cowboys With Bulldozers

Marguerite Humeau

Born 1986, Loire Valley, FR. Lives and works in London, UK

Marguerite Humeau creates dynamic, speculative worlds that resuscitate prehistoric pasts, summon parallel presents and envision imagined futures to explore the great mysteries of origins and ends. Her distinct treatments of time orbit the same essential question: ‘what lies beyond?’

Grounded in rigorous research and ‘what if?’ scenarios, she works with the silences in knowledge to create new mythologies for our contemporary era. Collaboration is central to her practice; she works with specialists including zoologists, anthropologists, clairvoyants, foragers and geomancers, collapsing hierarchies between different ways of knowing.

Her large-scale installations, at times encompassing entire landscapes, enact rituals of contact and function as living ecosystems. Within the visceral, temporary situations she creates, sculptures and sound elements take on an active, divinatory presence. Through them, she considers how life persists across ecological, psychic and cosmic terrains, and consciousness as shared across all forms of life.
